737NG Flightdeck Simulator Construction Diary

Page 2 - January 2007

I'm keeping a running diary of my progress here- the ups, the downs, the trials an tribulations of building one of these babies. The table is in reverse date order, so the most recent entry is at the top.

Got the flooring finished today.

The eyebrow plastic moldings arrived so I couldn't resist putting them in! Trouble is, when you get a genuine aircraft part like this you find where your measurements and angles aren't quite right. But after a bit of adjustment to the frame - all is well.

29 Jan 07

The glareshield was on the menu today. I didn't expect to complete it, but by 9pm it was done! (yes, yes - I'm obsessed - blah, blah :) ). I used the glareshield kit from Simulatory which provides the MDF parts, facings and top. The glare-wings including the 6-pack annunciators and warning lights/buttons are also from Symulatory. The 2 EFIS units and the MCP are from CPFlight.

The main instrument panel is next on the to-do list.

Work continues of the avionics pedestal. These pics show test-fitting of the panels.
Lots of sanding and painting to come now.

20 Jan 07

Design and construction work continues on the pedestal amongst much MDF dust!

19 Jan 07

Work has begun now on the avionics pedestal. The design is to mount the panels to an independent aluminium frame (with surround). This then sites squarely on top of the pedestal itself and is easy to remove for maintenance. The pic below shows the aluminium frame before final finishing.

Neil has been doing lots more planning on the overhead wiring (that's what you do when you don't want to start this mammoth task - lol). We've decided that having the I/O cards mounted within the case is going to be to cramped so we'll be mounting them in an add-on section on top of the case. In the pic you can see the lines of 16 x 40 pin headers that will be used to distribute the wiring for inputs/outputs to the ribbon cables which then feed back to the cards.

17 Jan 07

The shell frame is finally finished - yay! Grinding and primer complete, and as you can see in this shot most of the floor is on now.

11 Jan 07

Looking at the rear of the forward overhead panel. We've added aluminium rails for the I/O cards and you can see 3 of these installed (another 4 cards to go on yet!). We're turning each major unit of the flightdeck into a self-contained unit. This one, for example, will be fully sealed with just 1 USB and 1 power lead coming out the back. No spaghetti wire here - nuh uh!

Just waiting for wire and solder now. Shouldn't take (uh-hum) long to do... :)

10 Jan 07

The forward overhead taking shape - still some parts to install.

08 Jan 07

Ok - so this bit goes with that ... umm... no ... hmm ...

We are sure that the Boeing production line looks just like this... :)

(note to family ... notice NO bald spot ... haha!)

07 Jan 07

And here is the Symulatory Throttle Quadrant. We've got most of it wired up and working. Only downside - the reverse levers are missing in action.

And the engine fire control panel. Can't wait to trip the fire clanger off on some unsuspecting pilot :)

04 Jan 07

All the gear from Symulatory has arrived. The pic below shows the main instrument panel and the forward and aft overhead panels. There are also bags and bags of switches, anunciators, LEDS .... so much stuff to do now!

The Mode Control Panel (MCP) and all the radio and transponder units have arrived from CPflight as well. I'll put some pics of these up soon (promise!)
