737NG Flightdeck Simulator Construction Diary

Page 8: August 2007

I'm keeping a running diary of my progress here- the ups, the downs, the trials and tribulations of building the sim. The table is in reverse date order, so the most recent entry is at the top.

Finally got some dome lights installed to provide overall flood lighting. We had to compromise on their position because the rear 1/2 of the sim is not fully joined to the front 1/2 at the moment (due to the garage wall!). So the dome lights have been installed behind the aft overhead, rather than on the rear wall of the cockpit for now.

This shot shows the dome lights on with no other lights or displays running (so fairly dark). They are shrouded to prevent light spill through the windows onto the screens.

And the view looking from the instructors station / entrance

And the instructors station gets one too

Have started to add to the overhead trims. Here you can see the main comms speaker installed (left) and the aircon vent (right). By placing small speakers behind the vents we have the recirculation fan and PACK sounds actually coming through the vents .. sweet !

Just a quick update on what we're working on at the moment:

  • Autothrottle servos now working ... so we have moving throttle when the A/T is engaged
  • Speedbrake lever also working now, so when you land with it 'armed' it fully deploys.
  • Dual-state blue annunicators on the overhead now cycle through bright/dim states as they should.
  • Quality ATC speakers now in ceiling. Volume and switch-out controls on the comms panels.
  • Separate speaker system now for TCAS, GPWS and internal fan noises.
  • Separate speaker system for battery and avionics noise.
  • PACK and fan noises now programmmed with separate logic and with spool-up and spool-down.
  • Lots of small trim and paint jobs to improve the overall look and feel. There are many of these jobs to do and it all takes time.
  • We're working on LED dimmer circuits for ambient cockpit lighting, dome lights and MIP wash lights.

Just a few quick update shots... lots going on in the background but not too many exciting pics at the moment.

The clipboard top-sections are installed now on the armrests

Audio sockets now installed in the rear of the eyebrow window trims

Finished the back-cover for the forward overhead unit. This sits independantly of the overhead itself to allow for easy overhead maintanence. Not "pretty" I know :) ... but no-one that flies the sim sees this stuff. Inside the box is painted bright white to act a a light-box for the overhead backlighting. This spreads the light evenly and increases the instensity a bit too.

Ok.. well after much huffing, puffing and so forth the main ceiling panels are all finished, as are the upper window trims. Phew! Just gotta add some extra minor panel pieces and overhead speaker grills. May paint it off-white down the track too.

So here's some show-off pictures...This one taken with flash..

And 2 without flash...
