737NG Flightdeck Simulator Construction Diary

Page 9: September - October 2007

I'm keeping a running diary of my progress here- the ups, the downs, the trials and tribulations of building the sim. The table is in reverse date order, so the most recent entry is at the top.

EFB system installed and working! What's an EFB you ask? Stands for Electronic Flight Bag. It's software that wraps up all the paper you have to use in the cockpit into electronic form. This includes charts, checklists, weather and much more. It's much easier to find and view what you need.in the interface, rather than sorting through piles of paper.

We have 2 x 8" LCD touchscreens installed (1 for each crew member). The shot below show the First Officer EFB in use during a recent flight.

A preview video is also available.

MIP wiring finished. Haven't programmed it all yet but the critical bits like gear lever/lights and autobrakes are going... which is sweet to use! Just got the glareshield caution lights and 6-pack to do now, and the MIP floodlighting too.

This shot also shows some of the new visual system... still 3 projectors... but now using 5 view windows (yes 5... thats five... ah... FIVE). Sooooo much better and easier to handfly, especially for landings.

Wiring up the two comms panels that go in the pedestal. There are 3illuminated push-buttons for mic selection (in squawkbox for online flying), 15 mini-pots to control various radio volumes (on/offs mainly), speaker and headset volumes, and a transmit sprung-switch.

Hoods up! Neil working away on the wiring inside the pedestal. We got it all wired up to find a Master IO card had failed... bugga!

Also got the backlighting done. This is done with 2 cold-cathode tubes (12v). (bit blurry sorry)

Decided it was time to get the MIP all wired up... but this is no easy task. Had to dismantle all the monitors and then plan out all the wiring carefully as there is very little space back here. These shots show progress on the many LEDS, switches, annunciators and LED backlighting.

So Neil eventually convinced me to dismantle our current visual system and start again ! So ... here's where we're up to.

Projectors and mirrors are all ceiling mounted now and the sides are now front-projected (the centre is still back-projected). The centre view has been almost doubled in width, and the side views have been reduced in width a bit to 180 degrees (total) - to improve the quality and perspective. More shots later when its finished and tweaked.

The 3 projectors and 2 side mirrors (from the floor looking up).

All 3 mirrors and projectors in one shot. The screen is not installed yet but you can see the start of the timber frame for it coming down from the ceiling.

Neil has had enough of cockpit building and has just taken up dressmaking, so here I am giving him a hand with a large wedding dress.

Lol, no, that's the revised warp-around screen under construction :)
